Jacob Allison Long passed away at his residence in Graham at 12:25 this (Thursday) afternoon. he was stricken with paralysis about two o'clock last Saturday morning, which affected his entire right side and rendered him speechless. About three years ago he had a slight stroke, but he was able to go on crutches. When the stroke came last Saturday it was felt that the end was not far away and his children were summoned, namely, Mrs. S. E. Everett, Mrs. J. C. Holladay and Mrs. Hersey Woodard of Suffolk, Va., Mrs. R. J. Mebane of Greensboro, Mrs. A. H. Graham of Hillsboro, Hon. J. Elmer Long of Durham and Mr. Ralph Long of Winston-Salem; and his brothers Rev. Dr. W. S. Long of Chapel Hill, Rev. Dr. D. A. Long of Louisburg, and Judge B. F. Long of Statesville. All of these have spent most of the time here since Saturday. Col. Long was born April 6, 1846, and was in his 78th year. Owing to his death occuring so near our publication hour, an extended memorial of our distinguished townsman and citizen is deferred till our next issue. The funeral will be conducted at 11 o'clock Saturday morning from the Presbyterian church. | |
