- Mrs. Laura Pinner "Polly" Graham, 92, died February 16, 2011, at her home. She was born August 8, 1918, in Suffolk, VA, the daughter of the late John Franklin and Laura Etheredge Pinner.
Mrs. Graham graduated from Suffolk High School, and St. Mary's School, in Raleigh, NC. She continued her education at Hollins College. She married Alexander Hawkins Graham, Jr. (Sandy), on November 21, 1942. After several years in Baltimore, MD, they made their home in Durham. For many years, Mrs. Graham was an active member of St. Philips Episcopal Church, the Junior League of Durham, the Canterbury Club, Colonial Dames, and Hope Valley Country Club.
She is survived by her children, Margaret G. (Bill) Campbell , John Pinner (Sally) Graham, and Laura G. (Arthur) Whedon ; daughter-in-law, Suzanne Bittner Graham; brother-in-law, John W. (Betty) Graham, and their children; her grandchildren are, William Terrell Campbell, Alexander Graham Campbell, Suzanne Leidgen Graham, Alexander Pinner Whedon, and Margaret Conover Whedon; great-granddaughter, Lillian Graham Motsinger, who was born on January 30, 2011.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Graham was preceded in death by her son, Alexander Hawkins Graham, III.
The family is grateful for the devotion and care given to Mrs. Graham from her caregivers, Sue Cooper, Carissa Cooper, Joanne Miller, Jan Miller, Jan Boyd, Nancy Dunn, and Diane Bjorklund. Their loving care and devotion to Mother was exceptional in every way, and undoubtedly gave her many more years in which she was cherished by them and her family.
A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, at 10 a.m. in the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church Cemetery, in Hillsborough. Officiating will be Father Robert K. Kaynor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Duke HomeCare and Hospice, 4321 Medical Park Drive, Suite 101, Durham, NC 27704.
