CHESTER, Pa., June 4.-The badly mutilated remains of a man found along the tracks of the Pennsylvania Railroad at Folcroft today were identified as those of Samuel Custer, fifty years old, of Glenolden. he had been visiting friends at Folcroft and late last night in taking a short route to his home climbed over a fence it is believed and in crossing the tracks was struck by an express train and instantly killed. The body was discovered by the crew of a train. Custer was the son of the late Bethel M. Custer, prominent in the politics and history of Glenolden and vicinity. 2160 | Philadelphia Inquirer, 7 Mar 1919: Death Overtakes Founder of Bailey, Banks & Biddle Company Samuel Biddle, a member of the Bailey, Banks & Biddle Company, died Tuesday at his home, Forty-seventh street and City avenue, Bala. He was seventy-four years old. He was a direct descendant of Owen Biddle, a conspicuous figure in Philadelphia affairs in revolutionary days. Mr. Biddle began his business career here by purchasing the business of Thomas C. Garrett, a silversmith. He then formed the firm of Clark & Biddle and subsequently became a member of the firm of Bailey, Banks & Biddle, a house established by Joseph Howbridge Bailey, in 1832. Retiring about twenty-five years ago, Mr. Biddle became president of the German-American Trust Company, at Broad and Arch streets. Several years ago he retired from this position. 2164 | Philadelphia Inquirer, April 20, 1897: DEATH OF G.W. BIDDLE, He was The Head Of The Famous Family, Well Known as a Lawyer and Public Spirited Citizen-Events in His Career. George W. Biddle, the well-known lawyer, of 1624 Walnut street, died last night. Mr. Biddle was a member of the law firm Biddle & Ward, and was the head of the Biddle family. Mr. Biddle was born in this city on January 11, 1818. After receiving his education at St. Mary's Academy, Baltimore, from which institution he was graduated, he took to the study of law and was admitted to the bar in January 1839. His diligence and persistence application of his newly-chosen profession soon gave him a prominent place among the members of the bar. In politics he took an active part and was chosen from this city as a Democratic delegate to the Constitutional Convention, representing the First Senatorial District, composed of the First, Second, Third Fourth, Seventh, Eighth and Twenty-sixth wards.In 1876 he was a member of the commission to supervise the Presidential vote in Florida in the Hayes-Tilden controversy. During President Cleveland's last administration he was appointed one of the counsel in the Bearing Sea arbitration. Mr. Biddle has held the offices of school director, member of Common Council and trustee of the gas works in this city. He also held the office of chancellors of the Law Association for six years, succeeding Mr. McCall. In 1882 he received his degree of LLD from the University of Pennsylvania. He became honorary member of the Society of Cincinnati in 1882, and was the senior counsel of the society in the litigation affecting various sites for the Washington monument about to be unveiled. He was a son of the late Colonel Clement Cornwell Biddle, president of the Philadelphia Savings Fund, and commanded the State Fencibles. Helms, 93, mayor of Lansdowne from 1962 to 1978, died Thursday at Haskins Nursing Home in Secane, Delaware County. Before he became mayor, Mr. Helms served as a Lansdowne Borough councilman from 1958 to 1962. He entered politics shortly before he retired as manager of the medical department and safety at Bell Telephone for Pennsylvania and Delaware. He worked at Bell from 1910 to 1959. He also served a one-year term as vice president of the Delaware County Association of Mayors in the late 1960s. Mr. Helms held several leadership posts in service organizations during his lifetime, including president of the Track Officials Club of Philadelphia, chairman of the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra and commander of American Legion Post 65. He also belonged to the Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, Lansdowne Fire Company, Salvation Army and Lansdowne Republican Club. Mr. Helms was an Army veteran of World War I. He was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Lansdowne. He is survived by three sons, Jacob G., William E. and Robert P.; 11 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. A viewing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at Johnston Funeral Home, 67-77 E. Baltimore Ave. in Lansdowne. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. 2173 | Richard C. "Dick" Hurley, 77 of 11 E. Augusta Place, Apt. 231, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003. Born in Ridley Park, Pa., he was a son of the late Wilson F. and Helen M. Singles Hurley, and was the husband of Mary Nell Henderson Hurley. He was a graduate of Greenville High School, Class of 1943, and attended Clemson University. He was a veteran of the USNAF, World War II, and of the USAFSS, during the Korean Conflict. He attended the US Intelligence School, Obergannergau, Germany, and was a Russian Language Technician. His career included employment with Hurley & Harrison Inc., Greenville, and Sonoco Products Co., Hartsville, before forming his own company, The Hurley Associates. Mr. Hurley was instrumental in establishing the Italian Company, Mariplast, NA, Inc. in Greenville before his retirement in 1996. Surviving are daughters, Susan E. Hurley, of Newberry, Mrs. Preston (Laura) Dawkins, of Hartsville, and Mrs. Jeff (Kate) Roberson, of Concord, N.C.; sons, Daniel "Dan" C. Hurley, of Youngsville, N.C., and Wilson "Wil" F. Hurley II, of Lexington; a sister, Nancy Moore, of Greenville; stepchildren, Mr. J. Christopher Henderson, of Columbia, and Mrs. Mickey H. Smith, of Greenville; thirteen grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Richard "Chip" C. Hurley Jr.; and a sister, Mrs. Frances H. Chapman. Born in Bridgeton, NJ, Rita was a longtime resident of Bridgeton, and had previously lived in Vineland for 25 years. She was a graduate of Bridgeton High School, Class of 1948. Rita loved Elvis Presley and went to Graceland multiple times. She was predeceased by her parents Delbert and Susan (Creamer) Bacon, husband, George Ravior, son, Robert Ravior, four sisters, Alice Griner, Mildred Howell, Hilda White, and Mary Green, and a brother Richard Bacon. Rita is survived by two sons, Glenn and wife Linda (Bassano) Ravior of Minotola, and Steven Ravior and his companion Gina Cogdill of Vineland, four grandchildren, Ryan, Lindsey, Christopher, and Megan, two great grandchildren, her best friend, Pat Zucal of Richland, and many nieces and nephews. 2175 | Rita D. Leone, 93, of 1523 South Ave., Lewis Run, passed away Friday (May 7, 2021) at Penn Highlands Hospital, in Clearfield, with her family by her side. Born March 6, 1928, in Bradford, she was a daughter of the late Luigi and Mary Tartarella Mongillo. She was a 1946 graduate of St. Bernard School. On July 12, 1950, in St. Bernard Church, she married James Leone, who preceded her in death May 28, 1965. Rita had been employed as a cashier at Producers Bank and Trust, the Oxford Shoppe and Man's World. She was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church, Catholic Girl's Club, Frances Sherman Auxiliary, and she had volunteered at the Bradford Central Christian High School library. Rita excelled at playing scrabble, enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching Penn State and Buffalo Bills football and watching golf tournaments. Surviving are three daughters, Kathy (Scott) Buckenmeyer of Swanton, Ohio, Karen (Daniel) Dzenkowski of State College, and Karla (George Ruggles) Leone of Lewis Run; seven grandchildren, Jamie Dzenkowski, Daniel Dzenkowski, Bryan Dzenkowski, Shelley Dzenkowski, Rob Yohe, Jason Yohe and Renee Gleason; three great-grandchildren, Sophie Dzenkowski, Hudson Dzenkowski, Helen Dzenkowski; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Angelo Mongillo, and Tom Mongillo; three sisters, Ella Romano, Angie Copley, and Rose Yaros. 2176 | Robert F. Kinney, 99 of Port Allegany passed away Tuesday March 5, 2024 in Coudersport Pa. Robert arrived on Christmas Day 1924, just as the noon train passed by, born a son to Fred and Esther (Seyler) Kinney, on the Portage Road Kinney Farm, Port Allegany PA. He had four siblings; John, Orton, and James Kinney and a sister Belle (Jack) Ball. Bob remained and worked on the family farm until the age of eighteen at which time he enlisted in the Army and volunteered for the Ski Patrol. Following basic training at Camp Hale he left for Italy as a member of the io" Mountain Division Ski Troop. He was a very proud World War II Veteran who enjoyed sharing stories of his service years. Following the War he returned to Port Allegany and on November 20, 1948 married his sweetheart, Bernadine Thrash. At a young age Bob developed an interest in old automobiles that continued throughout his 99 years, including the acquisition and sale of old car parts, along with sharing his knowledge with other antique car buffs. One of his most treasured automobiles was rumored to have been originally purchased by notorious bank robber John Dillinger for his girlfriend Mary Longnecker. His final working years before retirement were spent with the former North Penn Gas Company where he developed many long-lasting friendships. A lover of animals he was rarely without a dog. In later years he could be found on many a summer day sitting on his front porch, with his dog, waiting for a passerby, looking forward to a visit. Bob was a member of the AACA, Liberty Lodge # 505 Free and Accepted Masons and the Coudersport Consistory. Robert is survived by one daughter; Rebecca Anjeski; one son Retired Colonel Terry J. 2178 | Ruth "Pat" Clarke Sharp, 100 NORTH YARMOUTH - Ruth "Pat" Clarke Sharp passed away Feb. 24, 2017, in Arizona, while visiting her son Jonathan and his wife Belinda. Ruth was predeceased by her beloved husband, C.C. (Budd) Sharp, and a daughter, Priscilla Ann Sharp. Born Dec. 12, 1916, in Fairfield, Conn., Ruth was the youngest of five children born to Mathew and Martha (Drew) Clarke. She attended Fairfield, Conn., public schools, graduating from Roger Ludlow High School. She attended the nurses training program at the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. She married Budd Sharp on March 4, 1939, and in 1944 they moved from greater Philadelphia to Yarmouth, where they raised three sons. Ruth's death was 33 years to the day of Budd's passing on Feb. 24, 1984. Ruth was a past president of the AFS (American Field Service) organization in Yarmouth and a past president of the Fortnightly Club in Yarmouth, as well as over 50 years as a member. Ruth moved to North Yarmouth within a few years of her husband's death in 1984. True to her Irish heritage, of which she was particularly proud, Ruth was a convivial person, surrounding herself with family and friends. She thoroughly enjoyed life, was blessed with a great sense of humor and a willingness to engage in a new adventure. She enjoyed every opportunity to be with her family. She also enjoyed traveling, entertaining, cooking, going out to eat, and visiting craft fairs during the Christmas season. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed visits each spring to nurseries and showing her bountiful flower gardens to friends and family. Ruth is survived by her three sons, Ted and wife Sharon, of Cumberland Foreside; Mathew and wife Nancy, of Mount Vernon; and Jonathan and wife Belinda, of Mesa, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. The family is forever grateful for the loving care extended to Ruth during her time at the Hospice of the Valley in Chandler, Ariz. Honoring Ruth's request, there will be no funeral service. Sandy graduated from St. Bernards Catholic School in Bradford, Pa., where she was valedictorian of her class. She then attended Buffalo General Nursing School and received a degree in nursing. She worked in the health care industry as a registered nurse, most of the time at Margaret Anthony Nursing Home. Sandy was an active member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Silver Creek. She was instrumenta in the creation of the Festival of Grapes and an integral part of the development of Aunt Millies Restaurant in Irving, NY. She and her husband helped with the Silver Creek Little League. They designed and painted the signs at the field along with numerous other functions. Sandy was very involved in her community and always looked forward to and participated in special events with her family, where she could share her creativity. Survivors include her four sons, Domonic L. (Louanne) Sack of Stamford, Conn., Patrick F. (Wendi) Sack of Ashburn, Va., Joseph J. (Robin) of Plantsville, Conn., Matthew P. (Nancy) of Plainview, NY; nine grandchildren, Collin, Ashtin, Giovanni, Vinson, Philip, Christina, Jordan, Allie and Payton Sack; one brother, Lebe (Phyllis) Monago of Old Bridge, N.J.; and three sisters, Congetta (Gerald) LePage of Spencerport, NY, Dorothea (Richard) Helms of Sunderland, Ontario, Beverly (Terry) Kinney of San Antonio, Texas. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Patrick F. Sack. Prayers will be held Friday, April 8, 2011 from the Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel in Silver Creek, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Silver Creek.
